Summary A general model for analysing disease‐marker associations from a random sample of patients and controls is given, assuming an arbitrary number of marker and disease susceptibility alleles. A method for testing the goodness‐of‐fit of various disease susceptibility models to the observed distribution of genotypes at the marker locus in patient and control samples is given. The method is demonstrated using a recently published data set on type I diabetes.
