A Critical Review Of Michael Purcell's Theological Development Of Levinas' Philosophy

A Critical Review Of Michael Purcell's Theological Development Of Levinas' Philosophy Australian Catholic University, Melbourne, Australia In the recent study of Mystery and Method: The Other in Rahner and Levinas,1 Michael Purcell2 has attempted to engage the philosophy of Levinas3 with the theology of Karl Rahner. He begins with a programmatic statement: we want to try to advance Karl Rahner and Emmanuel Levinas along the narrow way of convergence. We want to let the thought of Rahner and Levinas speak, as it were, in each other’s time in order to recognize, despite their differences something of each other in the other, to recognize primarily the significance of the Other in what each of them says.4 The key consideration is the ethical-theological significance of the Other, where the ethical is influenced by the theological and the theological grounded in the ethical.
