2011 — the highlights Editorial 2011 has been a busy year for the Editorial Review Board of Th e Radiographer, designing and implementing strategies to meet the needs of readers and encouraging authors to publish in Th e Radiographer. We greatly appreciate the support of this year’s authors for choosing to publish in the journal. Our goal is for Th e Radiographer to meet the needs of the readers with respect to publishing on topics that are of educational value to radiographers, radiation therapists and nuclear medicine technologists. Our goal is for Th e Radiographer to publish with minimal delay upon approval so that readers will benefi t from the currency of information. Th e Radiographer is the only scientifi c journal in medical radiation sciences that is open access. It is our intention for Th e Radiographer to increase its visibility by including it to relevant medical databases. 2011 was the year that we achieved these goals: 1 Publish four issues per year 2011 was the fi rst year that Th e Radiographer published four issues in March, June, September and December. Twenty-four papers were published ranging from four articles to nine articles per issue. It is likely that the number of papers published will increase with the potential merge with the journal of New Zealand Institute of Medical Radiation Technology (NZIMRT). 2 Publish a variety of papers and topics In 2011, 13 original articles, three review articles, two commentary papers, four invited papers, one short communication and one guest editorial were published. Th e papers range from cross sectional studies of education programmes and clinical practices, quality improvement projects on the impact of new technologies and clinical protocols to the users or patients, literature reviews and commentary papers of relevant education and clinical practices. Th is was the fi rst year that nuclear medicine papers have been fi rst published in Th e Radiographer. Th is is a refl ection on the changing working environments in the clinical and research settings where the health care professionals from all three strands of medical radiation sciences increasingly collaborate. In 2011, we continued to publish papers aimed at assisting researchers commence and manage their own projects. There are other types of papers that The Radiographer accepts which were not published in 2011. This includes case reports and research protocols. I hope that in 2012 these types of papers will be published in The Radiographer. Case reports are rare or uncommon patient cases or scenarios. The publication of these challenging cases provides educational value to the readers who, upon encountering a similar scenario, can refer to the published report for possible solutions. Research protocols of studies that are about to commence or are ongoing can be published in The Radiographer. However, for the research protocol to be considered for publication, evidence of full ethics approval must be submitted. 3 Involvement with Annual Scientifi c Meeting of Medical Imaging and Radiation Th erapy (ASMMIRT) 2011 was the fi rst year that Th e Radiographer became involved with the organisers of ASMMIRT. Authors submitting in ASMMIRT are given the option for their full manuscript to be peer reviewed by the reviewers of Th e Radiographer. Upon acceptance, the author(s) present in ASMMIRT and their paper published in Th e Radiographer. In 2012, we will continue to collaborate with the organisers of ASMMIRT in Sydney. Th e deadline for submitting the full manuscript is fast approaching. Give yourself that extra challenge and submit your manuscript for consideration for a full peer review and possible publication in Th e Radiographer. I eagerly anticipate the achievement of many more goals in 2012. As a supporter and reader of Th e Radiographer your compliments and recommendations for improvements are welcomed and highly valued.
