Untersuchungen von Drainagewässern zeigen, daß bei der Abscheidung von Calcit zwei verschiedene Prozesse wirksam sein können: 1. die Ausfällung von bereits im Grundwasser gelöstem Calciumcarbonat und 2. die Absorption von Luft‐CO2 durch alkalische Lösungen. Beide Prozesse lassen sich anhand der stabilen Isotope des Sauerstoffs und des Kohlenstoffs unterscheiden. Aus carbonathaltigem Grundwasser abgeschiedener Calcit hat δ13C ∽ −13%0 (PDB) und δ18O ≈ 24%0 (SMOW). Der durch CO2‐Absorption gebildete Calcit hat δ13C ≈ −25%0 (PDB) und δ18O ≈ 10%0 (SMOW).
