J. Randolph Osborne About the year 125 AD/CE a Greek by the name ofAristides wrote to one of his friends about the new religion, Christianity. He was trying to ex- plain the reasons for its extraordinary success. Here is an excerpt from one of the Letters of Aristides: If any righteous person among the Christians passes from tliis world, they rejoice and offer thanks to God, and they escort the body with songs and thanksgiving, as if the per- son were setting out from one place to another nearby. Quite a description of the Christian faith—and by an observer, not a participant. Today we gather as we do because of this Christian faith.
