Poor Folks

Poor Folks From the Norwegian of Ingeberg Refling Hagen What I always say is, "They just can't manage." White trash; they get a cow, the milk's all wasted, drunk up. Abstract

From the Norwegian of Ingeberg Refling Hagen What I always say is, "They just can't manage." White trash; they get a cow, the milk's all wasted, drunk up. If they've got chickens, they don't sell the eggs. Give em a dollar, it's gone in a minute. Well, let's take a bite. Please help yourself. It's just buffet-style, nothing to be proud of. I'm not baking now, but there's left-overs, old Christmas stuff, a little for a snack. What I always say is, "If you're careful with what you've got, you've always got something." Lordy, is that a funeral? I forget. I heard that Even died; they're burying him. He wouldn't take care of himself. Didn't keep warm. That tacky coat! Let himself get frozen. Well, it's just like I'm telling you right now : White trash, poor folks, don t know now to manage. Please, help yourself! You'll take cream? And your girls, how are they? and the boys? and there's no money coming. He left nothing. They'll be on the county. We 11 all pay and pay and pay until our pocket's empty. I tell you, ladies ; poor folk just can't manage. Wait! You know, I know just what: There's Even's oldest. I'll let my help go and take on Even's girl. That'll save wages and do a charity at the same time. (Of course it's the heart that counts in things like this.) I'll give her a dress and shoes. If she wants money Well, that would be just too much! I tell her what I'm telling you right here. People who take care of what they have always have something. They can always manage. Kiffin Rockwell She's left with five kids, not even church-age, Seems like we've heard this old story before! For more about Kiffin Rockwell's accomplishments, see first issue.
