While still in high school, he helped organize a Bluegrass band in which he played guitar and sang. He is still a member and writes original songs for the group. He attended Berea College in the mid-1950s. Ten years ago, Gayheart donated two small pencil drawings to be sold at a church benefit. The response to his drawings encouraged him to do others, and before long he felt he was launched on a career he loved. "Pencil Draw- ing is a medium...suited to the rustic quality of mountain life," he says. His signed and numbered prints are limited editions of 250 each.
