As children, they were always together, and in their early 20s worked the night shift at the same place—Appalachian Computer Services— and lived together in a trailer near Lily, Kentucky, where House began hisfirst novel, Clay's Quilt. Hoskins became the basis for one of House's most beloved characters, Cake Singleton, a wild, rough, yet ultimately tender- hearted young man searchingfor his place in the world in Clay's Quilt.
