One is my grandfather's .32; the other is the equally ancient military issue .38 Special which an uncle traded to get back Granddaddy's pistol. Both revolvers are lethal, working sidearms, history which is part pa- triotism, part terror, and part sentiment. These were the prized personal possessions of two men who are part of me. The ninety-year-old firearms are all that have survived intact, exacdy as they always were, the only direct contact I have to intimate family history. I know my grandfather only through legend, and of my uncle have only a dim, childish memory. But the two old pistols bring both men to life. My grandfather's hand once cupped the worn butt of the Smith 8c Wesson. My hand can now go where his once was.
