George Brosi New Releases Alderman, J. Anthony. Wildflowers of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Chapel Hill: University of North Carolina Press, 1997. 222 pages with indexes, glossary, and bibliography plus 36 unnumbered pages of color plates. Undersized paperback. $12.95. The Blue Ridge Parkway is a breathtakingy beautiful 469-mile road administered by the National Park Service which connecs the Shen- andoah National Park in Virginia with the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina. This book includes a guide to the seventy-five best parkway sites for viewing wildflowers, and it provides write-ups of 275 species of flowers arranged into seven color categories. It makes a point of including "no rare or endangered species." The annotations are strong on historical background and plant uses. The greatest weakness is that the color plates are small and located at the back of the book instead of close to the flower write-ups. The author is a photographer and naturalist from Burlington in the North Carolina Piedmont. Andrews, James, and Kenneth Wise. The Best Overnight Hikes in the Great Smoky Mountains.
