Religion in the Southern Appalachian region is taken very seriously, although many people are not church members. The Bible, the Biblical ordinances and the personal commitment of the traditional religion of Southern Appalachia gives each mountaineer a pattern by which to live. In this paper an examination will be made of how many mountain people use the Bible as a compass to guide their lives. Many of the traditional Baptist associa- tions have as their second article of faith: "We believe that the Old and New Testa- ments are the Word of God and are the only rule of faith and practice." This article of faith is subscribed to by Regular, Old Regular, Separate, United, Christian Unity, Union Baptist and many other denominations of back hollow Appalachia. The Thomas R.
