The Bearer of This Letter: Language Ideologies, Literacy Practices, and the Fort Belknap Indian... 2011 BOOK REVIEWS 385 In conclusion, Galloway’s dictionary is a rich and comprehensive study of the language based on very extensive example sets. It has an innovative structure that makes us think about dictionary organization in a fundamental way, and, that, most importantly, is always designed with the worthy goal of helping us to see the language on its own terms. To close this review, I have asked Elizabeth Phillips, to my knowledge the last living person to have spoken UH from childhood–and someone who also regularly uses Galloway’s dictionary in her work with the language–to comment on the dic- tionary. She says “Siyám smelá:lh Lawéchten, tset mékw’ shxwóxweches xwela tl’léwe wiyáth o. Skw’á:y cha kw’es melqláme wiyóth cha kw’es ite sqwáleweltset.” Which means (as I was able to check with the dictionary itself): ‘Dr. Galloway, we all raise our hands up to you.
