Kacey Link and Kristin Wendland’s Tracing Tangueros: Argentine Tango Instru- mental Music is a welcome addition to the growing literature on Argentine tango music available in English, reflecting the authors’ deep engagement not only with the music they examine but also with the artists who produce it and the place that it comes from. I read the book as part of a larger effort to identify, describe, and ultimately codify the fundamental features of tango music, an effort that has occupied a critical mass of tango scholars, music educators, and artists both within and outside of Argentina in recent years (much of which is cited and productively synthesized in this book). Link and Wendland want to know “what makes it a tango?,” and they find their answer not in some mystified notion of nostalgia or pasión but in the musical details of compositional strategies, arranging techniques, performance practice, accompaniment patterns, melodic interpretation, and so on.
