Religious Naturalism Today: The Rebirth of a Forgotten Alternative (review) and Browning covered a great many concerns in a relatively small number of pages. Ideas come thick and fast, and attention is required of the reader. But real life is like that too (especially if one is paying attention). Because dramatically assorted notions of the true and the good characterize our day, no book--even one as densely packed with ideas as this one is--can illumine every nuance of our reality. But Browning refused to oversimplify or to omit issues that many other authors might have ignored--out of ignorance, or for simplicity's sake. As a result, he painted a multidimensional portrait of what is "really real" in our day--and its several potential consequences. Browning's wide learning, worldly realism, academic sophistication, and concern for the good and for faith provide ingredients for a bubbling stew of new religious humanism. It is richly flavored indeed, and there are few thinkers equipped as well as Browning was to integrate its many nuances so skillfully. Many readers will have to think beyond their accustomed boundaries-- whatever those might be--to absorb and consider all of the issues raised in this multifaceted book.
