Reviewed by Ian Barber, University of Otago During the 1980s, the volcanic landscape incorporating the modified cone known as Pouerua in the inland Bay of Islands, New Zealand, was the subject of a large-scale archaeological investigation. The results of this work have been reported and interpreted in university theses, several published papers, and three volumes. The first two volumes as edited by project director Sutton present a series of reports on the archaeology of undefended settlements and smaller pa (defended earthwork sites) of the Pouerua area. The last volume of the project is under the multiple authorship of Sutton and two colleagues. It is a full report on the archaeology of the large, extensively terraced and defended Pouerua cone itself and has been long awaited in New Zealand archaeology. This publication is without question one of the most important archaeological research statements on New Zealand pa. Chapter 1 begins with a critique of pa scholarship that sets out the fundamental assumptions of the volume.
