Abstract
Speaking at the Border/Will These Words Reach . . . cho hae joang and ueno chizuko Translated by Teresa K-Sue Park and Miki Kaneda Translators’ Note The following letters are selections from an exchange between Cho Hae- joang and Ueno Chizuko that was fi rst serialized in 2003 and 2004 in the Japanese monthly Sekai and the Korean quarterly Contemporary Criti- cism. Two translators mediated the original letter exchange; Ueno’s letters were translated by Kim Chan-ho from the original Japanese to Korean, and Sasaki Noriko translated Cho’s letters from the original Korean to the Japanese. Thus, translation across a postcolonial relationship has been an integral part of this work from its inception. The letters were then jointly published in 2004 by Japan’s Iwanami Shoten publishing house as Will These Words Reach . . . and by South Korea’s Saenggak-ui-Namu as Speaking at the Border. Two additional letters or “Afterwords,” one by each author, prefaced this simultaneous publication. The cover image for this issue of Qui Parle is “Mineko” from the series “My Grandmothers” by Miwa Yanagi, which is discussed in Ueno’s sixth letter.
