Book Reviews 343 examining community identity both in terms of the communities that host festivals, as well as to better understand those communities of people who go to them. The viability of festivals is examined in ways that counter dominant economic develop- ment narratives that rely on traditional ways of measuring economic contributions. This examination is summarized by Patricia Tindall who succinctly explains in Chapter 5 that ‘when economic benefits are understood in a relative sense, seemingly insignificant events in small places, with little or no need to build new local infrastructure, can be under- stood as economically meaningful’ (p. 89). Importantly, the collection of case studies undertaken as part of this research project illustrate the need to fund research programs that offer opportunities to integrate research outcomes with the aim of building innovative rural and regional development knowledge. Some readers might have benefitted from the inclusion of chapter abstracts at the begin- ning of the volume, and short introductory paragraphs that highlight a description of how section contents and theories or conceptualizations were used to determine the five themes that unite a set of chapters. A brief conclusion would also have been useful, especially if it summarized –
