Tzanelli provides a persuasive analysis of this short feature, leaving the reader wondering what picture of national character will be presented when the Olympic Games comes to Rio in 2016. My main criticism of Olympic Ceremonialism and the Performance of National Char- acter is that the reader is left to draw their own ultimate conclusions from the study, the addition of a concluding chapter would have allowed the many and varied themes raised by Tzanelli to be pulled together into an effective close. Although the author makes her decision not to have a closing chapter clear at the start of the book, such a chapter need not signal a ‘closed narrative’ as Tzanelli suggests, but rather aid the reader as they reflect on the meaning and significance of what they have just read. As it stands, the book appears to end rather suddenly and more consideration of the overarching message conveyed via the often tightly packed analysis would certainly have been welcomed. Nevertheless, the book serves as a strong contribution to the growing interdisciplinary analysis of global cultural performances and their significance.
