The City

The City Journal of Urban Technology, 2013 Vol. 20, No. 3, 127–133, http://dx.doi.org/10.1080/10630732.2013.830525 Book Reviews By Deborah Stevenson (Cambridge, UK: Polity Press, 2012) Pp. 224, $22.95 (Paperback). The City by Deborah Stevenson is a compelling dissection of the city. Stevenson sets the city as an object of inquiry and uses multiple disciplinary frameworks to examine the city. She displays a mastery of integrating current and historical analysis of the city and draws insightful connections between concepts and pre- sents them in a thought-provoking manner. The book is organized into eight complementary chapters that explored the city through various lenses including a concluding chapter that summarizes all of the key findings and suggests areas for additional theoretical and applied research. Chapter 1, “Theoretical City: Concepts and Frameworks” offers the reader a concise summation of influential theories on the formation of cities as well as tools and methodologies used to study this object. The big question this chapter begins by asking is, “What is the city?” How do we define and categorize what is con- sidered the city? As a foundation point, Stevenson starts by examining how the Chicago School of Urban Sociology and Marxism conceptualized the city.
