PRELUDE TO A MYSTERY In the "sixties" when this social dream was created there existed a mood of manic desperation, which eventually gave rise to the count er-cultural revolution. Authorities in psychology, such as Thomas Szasz and Ronald Lang, made the usual outrageous statements such as mental 167 CHAPTER6 illness is a myth (Szasz) and society is more schizophrenic than the schizophrenic (Lang). This was the spirit of the time that gave birth to the book as well as the motion picture titled Sybil. In this chapter I will tell how the real story about Sybil was "manufactured"
