Prof. Lotfi A. Zadeh (1921–1927), born in February 1921 in the former Soviet Union Baku, now the capital of the Republic of Azerbaijan, known as the father of fuzzy logic, the founder of fuzzy theory, an automatic control expert of the United States, an American Academy of Engineering. On the morning of Septem- ber 2017, at 7.30 am, he passed away unexpectedly, the time he enjoyed his life for 96 years. We express our deep condolences over the death of Prof. Lotfi A. Zadeh. Old and sick is a natural phenomenon. There is an old saying in China that everyone must die in his lifetime. Zadeh has died, but the great cause of fuzzy set theory, which he initiated, is an important milestone in the history of the world’s artificial intelligence. CAO In order to inherit the legacy of Zadeh, carry forward his foundation, based on fuzzy mathematics, fuzzy set theory, fuzzy logic, Z numbers and Z-transform, the International Journal of Fuzzy Information and Engineering decides to publish this special issue in honour of Professor Zadeh for his great achievements. Prof. Zadeh is an old friend of the Chinese people and also a good friend of mine. His profound knowledge, encouragement and support to me, as well as his amiable attitude, made me a deep impression and made me remember for life. The first time Prof. Zade was visited to China, I was out of sight of him. When the second IFSA conference was held in 1987 in Tokyo, Japan, I presented my topic ‘Fuzzy Geometric Programming’ at the confer- ence and listened to the teachings of Professor Zadeh offstage and took a photo together. In 1999, I met him again and took a photo at the IEEE meeting in Seoul. In August 2015, he was invited to visit China and attended the foundation of the Fuzzy Information and Engineering Branch of China Operations Research Society held in Guangzhou University, delivering a warm speech. During the assembly, he read the introductory Chinese high-school mathematics text- book ‘Fundamentals of Fuzzy Mathematics (Senior High School Mathematics Extension Course)’, which was sent by a senior Chinese teacher Lin Hao-ran from Shanghai High School China. He was very happy, asking whether there was an English version. This enquiry put us into a great impetus for publication of the first textbook in fuzzy mathematics for high school in the world. When the book is jointly published by Springer (in English and other languages) and the Science and Education Press of China (in Chinese), a further- studied textbook for Senior Middle School Mathematics, ‘Fuzzy Sets Theory Preliminary — Can a Washing Machine Think?’, our beloved Prof. Zadeh has left us. We should turn sorrow into strength and make the ideas of the book universal. From October 25 to October 26, 2016, Xiangshan Scientific Conference, a high-standard and high-level academic event was held by the Chinese scientific community in Beijing, China. The meeting recommended that the Ministry of Education should set up a course of ‘Basic Knowledge of Intelligent Science and Technology’ in primary and secondary schools to cultivate interest in extracurricular activities. We should take this strong idea to work hard to incorporate the book ‘Fuzzy Sets Theory Preliminary — Can a Washing Machine Think?’ into ‘basic knowledge of intelligent science and technology’ for pupils in the elementary and middle schools. Prof. Zade explored new issues in the fuzzy field all his life and supported new things in fuzzy circles. When I invited him to be the Honorary Editor in Chief of the Magazine the moment I organized the International Journal of Fuzzy Information and Engineering, I sent an invitation to him on Monday, 11 August 2008 at 09.24 am (Monday), immediately at 18.02 pm on 11 August 2008 (Monday) he replied as follows: Dear Professor Bingyuan, Thank you for your invitation to join the Editorial Board of Fuzzy Information and Engineering as Honorary Editor in Chief.
