Paul B. Watt, Demythologizing pure land Buddhism: Yasuda Rijin and the Shin Buddhist tradition

Paul B. Watt, Demythologizing pure land Buddhism: Yasuda Rijin and the Shin Buddhist tradition CONTEMPORARY JAPAN, 2017 VOL. 29, NO. 1, 89–104 BOOK REVIEWS Demythologizing pure land Buddhism: Yasuda Rijin and the Shin Buddhist tradition, by Paul B. Watt, Honolulu, University of Hawai’i Press, 2016, xiv+182 pp., $52.00 (cloth), ISBN 978-0-8248-5632-8, http://www.uhpress.hawaii.edu/p-9573- 9780824856328.aspx With Demythologizing Pure Land Buddhism: Yasuda Rijin and the Shin Buddhist Tradition,Watt is the first to introduce, in book-length format, one of the most original and overlooked Shin Buddhist thinkers, Yasuda Rijin (1900–1982), to an English-speaking audience. As such, this volume is a welcome addition to our stock of scholarly titles that look beyond the usual suspects of contemporary religious philosophy. True to the introductory spirit of the task at hand, Watt opts in his ‘Introduction’ not for a detailed investigation of Yasuda’s thought, but for a rough biographical sketch (‘A Brief Biography,’ 8–14), a contextualization both within the historical Pure Land tradition (‘The Development of the Shin Buddhist Tradition,’ 14–25) and in 20th century Japanese philosophy (‘Yasuda’sModern Predecessors,’ 25–34), and an outline of Yasuda’s main ideas, followed by the translation of a handful of Yasuda’s essays on issues of Buddhist theology and lived spiritual practice that make for the largest part of the book.
