Message from the managing editor CONTEMPORARY JAPAN 2021, VOL. 33, NO. 2, 147 Dear readers, While there were great hopes that 2021 would shape up to be a very different year from 2020 with the world overcoming the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, this year has turned out to be another one full of trials and challenges. However, thanks again to the hard work of our authors, reviewers, and editorial board members, Contemporary Japan has continued to grow in its scope and content. CJ is now listed in 5 Scopus categories: Social Sciences- Cultural Studies (Area Studies), Social Sciences-General, Social Sciences-Sociology & Political Science, and Arts & Humanities-History. In addition, CJ’s CiteScore has risen again from 0.6 in 2019 to 0.9 in 2020, and it is now ranked as a Q1 journal (top 25% CiteScore ranking) in the categories of Social Sciences-Cultural Studies (Area Studies) and Arts & Humanities-History. This is thanks to our excellent authors and reviewers, and thanks also to the continued interest in our journal from you, our readers. Volume 33 Issue 2 brings together three original articles, an invited commentary, and eight book reviews. The original articles include: an analysis of how crime prevention (bōhan) became a widespread concept in low-crime Japan (Schimkowsky); http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Contemporary Japan Taylor & Francis
