Message from the managing editor CONTEMPORARY JAPAN 2019, VOL. 31, NO. 2, 117 https://doi.org/10.1080/18692729.2019.1659628 EDITORIAL Dear readers, This issue marks another important development for Contemporary Japan. In addition to 2019 being our first full year as a Scopus-indexed journal, our second issue of the year introduces a new section featuring invited papers written by internationally renowned scholars who present a critical overview of their field of expertise. This time we have the pleasure of benefiting from Ulrich Teichler’s insights on the development and current state of the Japanese academic world from the outsider perspective of a German education scholar. Teichler is a leading expert on global higher education, and his observations are the culmination of over 50 years of engagement with Japanese higher education. He offers a critical and holistic perspective on the academic profession in Japan through longitudinal analysis and international comparison. This issue also features a Special Section on “Emotions and Affect in Studies on Contemporary Japan,” consisting of three articles examining the emotional dynamics and affective dimensions of social movements of right-wing citizens (Asahina), suppor- ters of left-wing political prisoners (Steinhoff), and family members of lesbian, gay, and bisexual individuals (Motoyama), with an introductory commentary by Barbara Holthus, deputy director of http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Contemporary Japan Taylor & Francis
