Message from the editor

Message from the editor CONTEMPORARY JAPAN 2021, VOL. 33, NO. 1, 1–2 https://doi.org/10.1080/18692729.2021.1891497 Franz Waldenberger waldenberger@dijtokyo.org Dear reader, The first issue of the year by Contemporary Japan (CJ) always comes with a message from the editor, and I have had the honor to deliver this message to you since 2015. Never before has the one-year time span been accompanied by more fundamental changes in all aspects of our lives. When I wrote my message last year, these changes had not yet been foreseeable, except maybe by experts in the field of epidemiology. Today, we all have at least partial knowledge of what a virus is and have learned by painful experience its fatal and disruptive powers. Many international researchers in the field of Japanese Studies had to cancel their field trips to Japan, were constrained by the lock-down of libraries and archives and were deprived from social networking and personal face-to-face exchanges as workshops and conferences moved online. However, research did progress by using more digital tools and by spending less time traveling. Sometimes this implied adjusting topics and methods. Those interested in the latter might want to check the collection of articles on “Methods in Times of the Covid-19 Pandemic” recently compiled http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Contemporary Japan Taylor & Francis
