Message from the Editor CONTEMPORARY JAPAN, 2018 VOL. 30, NO. 1, 1–2 https://doi.org/10.1080/18692729.2018.1425082 EDITORIAL The collaboration with our publisher Taylor & Francis began with a very good start last year with two special issues in 2017. In addition, the publisher arranged for a Virtual Special Issue on ‘Rural Japan Revisited’ on the occasion of last year’s annual conference of the German Association for Social Science Research on Japan (VSJF) hosted by the University of Vienna. The virtual issue mirrored the theme of the conference and included articles from recent Contemporary Japan (CJ) issues related to the topic. Conference participants could freely access the articles for a limited period of time. The present Spring 2018 issue, CJ 30(1), is based on general submissions. All of the six original research papers had to pass our double-blind double-peer review process. In line with our publication policy, they cover a wide range of topics reflecting the scope of international research on contemporary Japan, which in turn resonates with the variety of challenges and issues Japan faces: legal questions of birth control and euthanasia, child welfare and education, social inclusion of the elderly, the role of local media in the aftermath of natural disasters, and relations with Southeast http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Contemporary Japan Taylor & Francis
