ISBN 978-0-198-78900-0. Hardback. This substantial volume is the second monograph published on Roman London in the past four years, joining the reviewer’s Londinium: A Biography (2018). It is interesting to compare the different ways that these two books interpret the same body of archaeological and historical material. Londinium, the largest Roman urban settlement in Britain, had a highly significant role in the province(s) of Britannia from the AD 50s to the early fifth century. Perring’s book is extremely well written and includes copious black and white illus- trations, including maps, photographs, and reconstruction drawings. Perring follows his earlier writings on Roman London by emphasising the official involve- ment of the Roman state in the establishment and running of the town. Perring develops his earlier claim, published in an article over a decade ago, that London was founded on the site of a Roman camp established in 43 that was visited by Claudius on his short stay during the early months of the Roman invasion.
