Journal of Social Distress and the Homeless, Vol. XXI, Issue 3&4, Oct. 2012 Introduction to the Special Issue on Tran- sracial and Transnational Adoption: New Directions in Critical Transracial Adoption Research John Raible University of Nebraska-Lincoln Since 2000, St. John’s University, in collaboration with Montclair State University, has produced conferences memorable for taking an innova- tive interdisciplinary approach to examining adoption through multiple lenses. Unlike other adoption conferences that tend to be dominated by adoptive parent organizations or adoption agencies, the biennial Adoption Initiative conferences address primarily scholars and practitioners in order to develop a more comprehensive—and in some respects, more critical— understanding of the impact of adoption on individuals over the course of the lifespan. Consistent attention is given to the psychological, social, and cultural implications of adoption, rather than merely offering an essen- tially pragmatic “how-to” focus on developing parenting skills, recruiting families, or waving an avowedly pro-adoption flag. Over the years we have attempted to articulate a perspective on adoption as a complex unfolding phenomenon that has far-reaching and perhaps unforeseen implications for both individuals and society at large. Adoption affects literally millions of individuals throughout the United States.
