Marks HIS issue of the Journal of Urban Technology is devoted to a series of papers presented at a September 16-17, 1996 TWorkshop on the Future of Cities. The workshop was spons- sored by the Alliance for Global Sustainability, a unique university partnership with global reach, initially involving the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA), The Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology (Switzerland), and the University of Tokyo (Japan). The Alliance commits the academic and research resources of these three universities to a joint search for technology and policy solutions that reconcile ecological and economic concerns. It fosters global collaborations that address issues of sustainable development. These collaborations unite corporations, governments, and universities from both the industrialized and developing worlds. Through these collaborations, Alliance researchers analyze alternative policies for sustainable development and develop new, cleaner, more efficient technologies to help modern societies balance environmental and economic needs. Researchers study global andregional change, clean design and production, mobility, energy and the environment, trade and the environment, the impact ofhuman activity on the environment and health of residents of urban regions, and the ways better science and technology http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Journal of Urban Technology Taylor & Francis
