From the Editor and Guest Editor: Urban Sustainability in China

From the Editor and Guest Editor: Urban Sustainability in China Journal of Urban Technology, Vol. 17, No. 3, December 2010, 1–2 From the Editor and Guest Editor: Urban Sustainability in China Four of the five papers in this issue were originally prepared for a session of the Third World Forum of China Studies, organized by the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences and held in the Shanghai Exhibition Center, Shanghai, in Septem- ber 2008. The sub-forum from which these papers emerged was jointly organized by the Academy’s Center for Eco-economy and Sustainable Development and this journal. The papers presented at the sub-forum focused on energy and sustainable development with a special emphasis on sustainable urban development. In the issue’s first paper, which is based on one of several presentations to relate the experience of other countries to China’s development, Niels Schulz writes about London’s strategies to meet climate change. He explains why cities are central to any efforts at sustainable development. While cities occupy only 2 percent of the earth’s surface, they house half of the world’s population and produce three-quarters of its fossil fuel-related emissions. So if new systems of climate change abatement and mitigation are to be effective, they must be intro- duced and deployed in urban centers. http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Journal of Urban Technology Taylor & Francis
