Deprivation and Health in London An Overview of Health Variations within the Capital Deprivation and Health in London An Overview of Health Variations within the Capital MARTIN BARDSLEY DAVID MORGAN Introduction This paper examines information on the health of the population of London and the relation- ships to indicators of deprivation. It aims to give a city-wide overview of some of the key health issues facing London and examines a handful of indicators in detail to look at the extent of variation within the capital. The information that we have about health status is limited. In this review, the emphasis is on data available at a ward level and covers adult and infant mortality rates, admissions to hospital and limiting long term illnessl. Good health for a population can be linked to many factors including aspects of lifestyle, genetic background and the physical and social environment. Given the heterogeneity within the communities in London, it is not surprising that there are variations in levels of health and the ways that ill-health is manifested. Within London, there are certain key features that shape the health of the city including: a.
