Yet the discrepancy between the elevated reputation of the nation abroad and the reality of penury and oppres- sion at home had become too stark to bear. Some saw no solution other than desperate attempts to foment revolution. This book is the account of the most infamous of these plots: the Cato Street Conspiracy. It is a triumph for both the professional historian and the general reader, starting with the carefully considered, incremental structure of the volume as it moves from the bare bones of the plot, through its various interpretations, to the wider political situation, the personalities involved and finally the trials themselves. To further its ambition, rich illustration in the form of a timeline of events, contemporary maps, illustrations, and portraits of protagonists all assist in imagining the narrative and its background.
