Book Reviews J. F. MERRITT ed, Imagining Early Modern London. Perceptions and Portrayals of the City from Stow to Strype, 1598-1720. Cambridge, Cambridge University Press, 2001. xii + 305 pages. ISBN 0521773466. £40. Like other recent volumes of essays about early modern London, this collection began life as papers presented at a conference. Imagining Early Modern London is an excellent example of the genre - inspirational, multifaceted and coherent. Ten authors, including Julia Merritt herself, explore perceptions, experiences and pres- entations of London during a period of dramatic transformation, passed on by people who lived there or who came to visit. These interdisciplinary essays explore the impact of extensive changes in the physical, environmental and social character of the metropolis on a variety of Londoners. The sources used are innovative and varied. As well as historical commentaries, the authors deploy livery company, church court and parochial records along with pamphlets, diaries, letters and archi- tectural treatises to search the mental worlds of a broad swathe of early Londoners.
