An Open Issue ARCHITECTURE AND CULTURE Suzanne Ewing Edinburgh School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture, University of Suzanne Ewing and Diana Periton Edinburgh Diana Periton Independent Scholar, London This tenth issue of Architecture & Culture is its first “open” issue, its first Keywords: openness, without an explicit theme. As a relatively young journal that aims “to open issue, architecture and culture, architectural promote a conversation between all those who are curious about what project, editing architecture might be and what it can do,” we are conscious ourselves of being in Umberto Eco’s “‘open’ situation, in movement. A work in progress.” Eco, talking about works of art – whether music, painting, or architectural compositions – argued that they should be understood Volume 4/Issue 2 as specific “closed” forms that simultaneously offer open and multiple July 2016 interpretations and performances, constructed by the different pp 167–171 perspectives of each listener, viewer, or inhabitant.
