The Lens of Culture and Forensic Nursing Practice

The Lens of Culture and Forensic Nursing Practice CHAPTER 10 The Lens of Culture and Forensic Nursing Practice Ashley Smith and L. Kathleen Sekula ABSTRACT Forensic nursing is a relatively new area of nursing practice and one about which little is written regarding the impact of culture on the various areas of forensic nursing practice. Forensic nursing is an evolving nursing specialty that focuses on healthcare when legal issues are involved. When referring to cul- ture related to the practice of forensic nursing one must take into consideration a broad approach to the various cultures that must be taken into consider- ation. For example, the culture of correction holds many variables in addition to the individual personal cultures that prisoners bring to corrections including the question of caring versus custody. The culture within corrections is often addressed through Foucault’s theory of power. An additional area for attention is the LGBTQ communities. As has been our history when one refers to gender bias or gender discrimination, we viewed gender as a binary demographic— female and male. Gender identity and culture share a strong connection as they affect daily life in all aspects of a person’ s life. In this article we address two areas of forensic nursing practice http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Annual Review of Nursing Research Springer Publishing
