CHAPTER 3 The Experience of Being a Parent CONTENTS Method of Review Nursing and the Experience of Being a Parent Research Trends Methodological Considerations Key Themes Strengths and Weaknesses Recommendations for Future Research Recently both the name and the focus of many departments of maternity nursing were changed so the emphasis is on parenthood over the years and not just on labr and delivery. Instead of viewing motherhood in its most biologic sense, the focus increasingly has been on the developmental challenge of parenthaod for both sexes (McBride, 1973). The most recent nursing research roundtable hnded by the March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation (Ledeman, Raff, & Carroll, 198 1 ) included presentations and discussion of patterns of parental development in both naturalistic and clinical settings, The growth and development strains of affiliative rela- tionships are regarded as phenomena of prime concern to nursing (Amer- ican Nurses' Association, Note 1). Given the fact that the nursing pmfes- Elizabe~ Jeannine Cale was of invaluable help in searching the literature and screening IIW listings of research-based articles.
