Sleep research is interdisciplinary, but to date little research has been done by nurses. However, increasing nurse involvement in sleep research is evident in the literature. The purpose of this chapter is to review 71 72 RESEARCH ON NURSING PRACTICE research related to sleep mainly reported in the nursing literature for its content, methodology, and the perspectives used to generate the­ ory and to suggest potential research thrusts. Occasionally studies not part of nursing literature are mentioned because of their relevance to nursing considerations.
