The first chapter, in Volum e 6 of the Annual Review of Nursing Research (Lindeman, 1988), included research related to the following five categories of variables: (a) characteristics of the patient as learner; (b) characteris­ tics of the nurse as teacher; (c) nurse-patient interaction as instruc­ tional strategy; (d) characteristics of the target group; and (e) the health care setting as the learning environment. This review includes research in which the content of the patient education intervention was the primary variable. To identify studies for the review, computerized searches using MEDLINE and the Educational Resources Information Center (ER IC) were done with the following subtitles: patient education , comparative 199 200 OTHER RESEARCH studies, clinical trials, evaluation studies, and preoperative education.
