During the past 15 years, well over 300 research articles on this topic have been published in the nonnursing literature, compared to approxi­ mately 20 articles in the nursing literature. Fewer than eight orthe nurs­ ing articles were identified as research-based. A comprehensive survey of works that were published by nurses from 1965 to 1986 was under­ taken for this review. Titles, abstracts, and articles that referred to con­ tracts were identified by computer and manual searches of the literature in nursing and related fields. Published and unpublished theses, disser­ tations, and reports were sought.
