During the past 15 years, well over 300 research articles on this topic have been published in the nonnursing literature, compared to approxi mately 20 articles in the nursing literature. Fewer than eight orthe nurs ing articles were identified as research-based. A comprehensive survey of works that were published by nurses from 1965 to 1986 was under taken for this review. Titles, abstracts, and articles that referred to con tracts were identified by computer and manual searches of the literature in nursing and related fields. Published and unpublished theses, disser tations, and reports were sought.
