Nursing education programs in Korea are comparable to programs in the United States. There are eight doctoral programs in the country. The aim of this chap- ter is to provide insight about nursing research in the Republic of Korea by examining dissertations completed between 1982 and 1991. Research for this overview was conducted in three parts: (a) all Korean National Library of Congress indices were reviewed for nursing dissertations; (b) three colleges were contacted for complete dissertation retrieval; and (c) future directions of Korean nursing research were assessed using data culled from an August 1991 forum sponsored by the Lambda-Alpha chapter-at-large of Sigma Theta Tau International. By using dissertations the author was able to assess the reliability and validity of research instruments as well as the theory or framework guiding the research. Via consultation with doctoral faculty and deans, a consensus was reached that these dissertations represent the vanguard of Korean nursing research.
