Nursing Diagnosis Overview and Definitions Concept Identification and Validation Retrospctive Identificafion and Validation Identijication and Clinical Vdidation of Phenomena Summary and Fuhm Remh Dimtions The purp~se of this chaptu was to summarize and critique the major investigations dated to idenmcation and validation of nursing diagnoses. The review of research spanned the years I950 to 1983. This perid encompassed the first teference to nursing diiosis in the literature (McManus, 19501, the initiation of systematic efforts to identify the phe- nomena of concern to nurses, and attempts to validate nursing diagnoses ttuough clinical research. No attempt was made to review research pertain- ing to each of the 50 to 70 cumtly identified nursing diagnoses huse of the extensive nature of such a review. Literature indexes, computer listings, hand searches of major nursing reswch journals, prooeedings of confer- ences, and informal contacts with colleagues in the United States and Cmda were used to identify =search reports. Included in the review were studies with the stated p-se of identification or validation, of diagnostic concepts within the domain of nursing practioe and studies in which directions for future resesrrch were identified.
