Within our health care system we now have a work force of 1.6 million nurses in settings ranging from Iarge corpo- rate institutions to private practice. Scientific breakthroughs and in- novative technology have extended the boundaries of health care to unlimited potential. As a result, the knowledge and skill necessary for effective nursing care is greater than ever before. Technological ad- vances and a concomitant concern for cost containment have placed the health care delivery system in a state of turmoil, and, as the largest health care discipline, nursing is facing major changes in education and practice.
