Most theo fists and practitioners recognize that the nurse- patient relationship is developed through interaction and is the essence of nursing. Nurse patient interaction is made possible through communication, a pro cess through which individuals create meaning. Through this commu nication process the nurse and patient influence one another and the patient's health can be influenced therapeutically and supportively (Kim, 1987). 213 214 OTHER 1I.IlSEARCH Because communication is an essential part of nursing interven tion or serves as the intervention itself, an important part of nursing research should be focused on understanding the communication between the nurse and patient and the consequences of this communi cation for the patient (Diers & Leonard, 1966).
