The first is {he wellness-illness continuum. a bipolar inleraclive portrayal of health and illness in myriad configurations ranging from high-level wellness to depletion of health (death). High-level wellness is further conceptualized as sense of wellbeing, life satisfaction, and quality of life. Movement toward the negative end of the continuum includes adaptation to disease and disability through various levels of functional ability. The wellness-i llness conceptualization is supported by Keller's ( 1981) review of health lite rature and is consistent with the categories identi· fied by Smi th (1981) in her philosophical analysis of health.
