Engaging in Policy During Graduate Training

Engaging in Policy During Graduate Training CHAPTER 9 Engaging in Policy During Graduate Training Joanna R. Sells, Douglas A. Taylor, and Tracy Sbrocco ABSTRACT This chapter explores the experiences of a clinical psychology PhD student and a Doctor of Nursing Practice, psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner student at Uniformed Services University (USU) as they integrate public policy into their education and training. USU is unique in its mission to train both military and civilian students in graduate, nursing, and medical programs. USU is part of the Department of Defense and has unrivaled access to information and experience in military culture and policy as well as highly integrated multidisciplinary train- ing among future health professionals. Both student authors of this chapter have been mentored by Patrick DeLeon, PhD, JD, MPH, who is a distinguished profes- sor in the Daniel K. Inouye Graduate School of Nursing and Medical and Clinical Psychology Department at USU. Both students have attended several quarters of Dr. DeLeon’s Health Policy Seminar, a cross-disciplinary weekly seminar that takes places at USU on Friday afternoons. This class serves as a small intimate forum for students and faculty to engage with high-level policy makers involved in military, nursing, psychology, law, medicine, Veteran, and health care http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Annual Review of Nursing Research Springer Publishing
