Long attributed to senility, hardening of lhe arteries, or the aging process, Senile Dementia of the Alzheimer's Type or Alzheimer's disease (AD) is now a household word. Approximately 10% of persons between the ages of 65 and 75 years and 25% of those over 85 are reponed to suffer some form of dementia (Evans et aI., 1989). Sixty percent of the elderly who are demented are reponed to have Alzheimer's disease 19 20 RESEARCH ON NURSING PRAcnCE (Fryer, 1983; Pajik, 1984).
