Using the (DSM-Hi-R) terminology, the apprqiate diagnostic terms for addictive disorders art psychmctiw substame abuse and psy- choactive substmce depe&nce. Alcohol abuse, alcohol ~~, and abuse and dependence of specific drugs and dependence are included in these diaguwes (American Psychialxic Association, 1987). Dependence is di- -tidy dew as impaired control of substance use and continued use despite adverse consequences. Abw is defined as maladaptive patterns of substance use. In this chapter, the terms alcohol ztnd drug &use md depen- dence am used even though terminology was not always well deM in the repwts. Resemh on alcohol md drug abuse in nurses published between 1980 and 1990 is reviewed. Initial data were gathered by a computer search of the Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allid Health Literature (CINAHL) frorn 1983 to 1991. The topics searched were substance use, substance depen- dence, alcohol, and dwholism. A manual search of CINAHL was conducted for the years 1980 to 1983.
