Eastern Africa remained the world’s least urbanized sub-region, but with its projected average annual urban growth of 5.35% over the 2010–2020 decade, it is by far the world’s most rapidly urbanizing region (UN-Habitat 2014). Ethiopia and Tanzania are on strong paths of absolute urban population growth with 41.9 and 61.5 million, respectively, between 2010 and 2050 (UN-Habitat 2014). Close to half of urban dwellers reside in relatively small settlements of less than 500,000 inhabitants (UNDESA 2014). Given the rapid urbanization of cities and towns in Africa, therefore, urban planning is vital to respond to the demands of various groups and address the pressing problems of these areas. Urban planning plays a significant role in guiding, directing, and managing urban spatial development starting from the past to present worldwide.
