The Metrics of African Urbanization Urban Forum (2017) 28:329–331 https://doi.org/10.1007/s12132-017-9322-3 1 2 Jacqueline Borel-Saladin & Susan Parnell Published online: 12 October 2017 Springer Science+Business Media B.V. 2017 The collection of articles on measuring urbanization in Africa emerges from research undertaken to inform analysis of urban food insecurity in secondary cities (under the auspices of the ESRC/DFID-funded Consuming Urban Poverty (CUP) Project. )The CUP project advances debates on urbanization in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), the nature of urban poverty, and the relationship between governance, poverty, and the spatial characteristics of cities through a focus on urban food systems. It is common cause that secondary cities are under researched in SSA; yet, they are important, growing sites of urbanization. Specifically, the role smaller places play in the new economic geography of nations and in the workings of the overall settlement system in developing countries is not well understood. Still, they are predicted to be fundamental to the economic drivers of the development of countries and regions in the future (Roberts 2014). Even small cities are complex places. Understanding small town interactions of resources, people, and consumption is made more difficult by the paucity of data.
