By SHnNa-SHE~ CHSRN In receiving this great and unusual honor my mind naturally turns to those friends and teachers who have influenced my mathematical career. Among the ones in Hamburg I wish first of all to mention Pro- fessor E~_A~UEL SPERNER. In Peking in 1933 I attended his lectures on elementary topology. It was my first introduction to modern mathe- matics and it opened my eyes. I wish also to mention Professor ERICE KXm,ER. When I came to Hamburg in 1934 as a student, Professor K~HLER just finished his famous book, ,,Einfiihrung in die Theorie der Systeme yon Differentialgleichungen", whose content was later to be known as the CARTA~-K~HLER theory. From his seminar I realized the power and the insight of the work of ELIE CARTA~ and I was given the courage to study Cartan's original papers. Professor K~hler's patience with me is unforgetable. It was Professor BLASCHXE whose influence on me cannot be over- stated. In 1932 he visited Peking as part of his world tour. I was a young college student in his audience. I was immediately impressed by his fresh ideas and his insistence of mathematics to be a lively and in- telligible subject. This contact
